A NEW VIDEO INSPIRED BY JANET JACKSON SHOWS COI LERAY’S “PLEASURE PRINCIPLE”

In the sultry music video for her new track, “Sweetheart,” Coi Leray pays homage to Janet Jackson.

The 26-year-old rapper and singer dropped “Can’t Come Back” on Friday, April 26, accompanied with a music video that pays homage to the iconic images from Michael Jackson’s 1986 hit song “Pleasure Principle.”

Melz & TrueBeatzz produced Leray’s hit, which shows the New Jersey celebrity dancing in a warehouse like the original from more than thirty years ago. But considering the difference in the song they’re dancing to, her attire and body language differ significantly from Jackson’s.

Recently, Coi Leray made it apparent that she wants to be recognized for her artistic abilities—something she says her previous label never intended to do.

During a livestream earlier this week, the rapper from “Players” discussed her relationship with Republic Records and disclosed that the label’s officials had been pressuring her to emulate Taylor Swift.

“I’m on Island [Records], not Republic Records anymore,” she declared at the outset. They wanted pop crap when I dropped Blue Moon, Republic. They wanted some Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift stuff, which I can provide, but I still like to work at my own speed and on my own schedule since I’m still refining my sound and evolving as an artist.

They weren’t fond of the Blue Moon stuff. They felt they didn’t want to invest any money in it, but I wouldn’t say they didn’t enjoy it. You have to make real-world judgments when it comes time for me to take out my wallet and invest my own money in my music.

She also mentioned how not everyone enjoys “every Coi in the pond,” alluding to her adaptability and capacity to sing, rap, and adopt different looks.

In early 2024, the 26-year-old moved into a new residence, and she didn’t lose any time in starting her career with Island Records.
